In my household there are two students pursuing their Ph.d’s. Statistically one of us will complete and one of us will not. If you are now reading this, then the chances are I am the one who made it. The reality is 50% of students pursuing a Ph.D succeed in their scholarly endeavor and 50% do not. This figure is not deeply buried in the literature on Ph.d completion rates. It is quite the opposite, this figure lives out there in the empirical data, anecdotal stories, newsprint articles, ph.d urban myths and the social media networks designed to ‘help’ students succeed.
